Sugar cube incineration

This project will show a catalyst’s role in the combustion process of a sugar cube.

  • Sugar cube
  • Matches
  • Ashes

  • At first, try to set the sugar cube on fire using the match.
  • You won’t be able to do it.
  • Cover some ashes on a side of the cube.
  • Now, set it again on fire.
  • See what happens.

In the second time, you would see the sugar cube catching the fire and burning.

The presence of a catalyst helps a chemical reaction to happen. In the above-mentioned process, ash acted as a catalyst, which helped the cube burn. However, the ash would not change during the combustion process.
