Self-learning without any external aide makes a student an independent thinker. Most importantly, it gives the student the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them.
Therefore, when a child learns independently and cracks a difficult problem, it is a reward in itself. Students retain knowledge better when they learn on their own, as then only they can relate to their work better and don’t feel restricted or imposed upon. In a self-learning environment, the job of a teacher is only to evoke a student’s enthusiasm to learn and identify his or her needs.
Once a student gets into the practice of self-learning, he/she will soon muster the courage to delve into an area of interest. Self-learning gives the opportunity to develop good work ethic. It allows the learner to go deep into a subject, test with or skim over materials learnt, and focus on mastering the areas containing new information and/or skills.
Modern technologies have given a new dimension to the concept of self-learning and combined it with the concept of collaborative learning. Various self-learning websites run their own forums, thereby providing students with the flexibility to participate in discussions (running on the websites’ bulletin board-threaded discussions areas) at any time and connect with teachers or fellow classmates through chat rooms.
Besides, in today’s fast-paced world where the knowledge base of the world at large is shooting up literally every minute, a student needs to be self-sufficient and reduce his/her dependence on the teacher.
