Answer.

A speech sound intermediate between a vowel and a consonant,   e.g. w  or  y.
 EXAMPLE
The play opens with a speech by Flavius(spelled ‘Flauius’ in the old Latin style where u and v are not distinguished since the latter is just the semivowel corresponding to the vowel represented by the former).

DEFINITION:

examples:
If you observe in the word "CRY" , 'Y' acts as vowel where as 'Y' acts as semi vowel in the word "YES"

In phonetics and phonology, a semivowel (or glide) is a sound, such as English /w/ or /j/ that is phonetically similar to a vowel sound but functions as the syllable boundary rather than as the nucleus of a syllable.
                                                                                OR

SENTENCE EXAMPLE

MORE EXAMPLES
 
The semivowel W represents the vowel sound "oo" when it occurs next to another vowel: 
- water (oo, short O), 
- cow or mouse (short A, oo).

The semivowel Y is the vowel sound "ee": 
- yes (long E, short E), 
- sky or high (short O, long E), 
- onion (long E, short U), 
- pinjata (long E, short O).
