# Why 82° 30' E longitude has been selected as the standard meridian of India?

Why is 82 30e has been selected as the standard meridien of india?

Prem Sidharth

82°30' E has been selected as the Standard Meridian of India because it is situated in the centre of all longitudes and latitudes in which our country is located.

Chandan Kaswan

This is because India is a vast country and have a great difference in sunrise timing along East in Gujrat and West in Arrunachal Pradesh. Hence, it is necessary to have a specific time all over the India which is done by taking Standard Meridian of India at 82.300East at the Tropic of Cancer passing through the middle of India.

Answer. The Earth has been divided into 24 time zones of one hour each. Each of these zones covers 15 degrees of longitude. As the local time differs by 4 minutes at every longitude, it would create a lot of confusion regarding time for any country as a whole which may stretch across several longitudes. Therefore each country selects a central meridian and the local time of this meridian is the standard time of that country. The local times which lie on different meridians are bound to differ. The sun rises two hours earlier in Arunachal Pradesh as compared to Gujarat. This causes a time lag of 2 hrs from Gujarat to Arunachal Pradesh to avoid confusion and to have a standard time for reference, The 82.30'Eastern Longitude has been taken as the standard time for the whole country. The local time at this Meridian has been accepted as the Indian Standard Time (IST) throughout the country because it passes through the middle of the country. It has helped to avoid a lot of confusion which would have been there by following different local times or in absence of a uniform time.

82 degree 30 minutes  is selected as standard meridian because it lies almost in center of the india. it has prevented alot of confusion from place to another and has brought harmony in timethroughout the country.the local time ateach longitutde is different so, in order to follow one timing we have accepted 82degree 30minutes as standard meridian.

82degree 30'E is almost middle meridian of longitude of India.                                           On international basis of globe has been divided into 24 time zones in every zone local time of middle longitude is taken as standard Time of the entire zone, because 82degree30'E is well divisible by 7degree30'E a standard is adopted by almost of all the country, while they selected standard meridian respectively it's time considered the standard meridian as eastern most tip and Western most tip where as there is 2 hours difference between their local time .

Ans- 82⁰30'E has been selected as the standard meridian of India because of the following reasons:-                                                      (a) It passes through the middle of the country.                                                                          (b) In every time zone the local time of middle longitude (divisible by 7⁰ 30' ) is adapted as the standard meridian. As 82⁰30'E is easily divisible by 7⁰30' it is selected as the standard meridian of india.                                                                           (c) To avoid the confusion of local time of every place 82⁰30'E has been taken as the standard meridian of india.                                                                                                                                Hope it helps......
