Subject-wise and class-wise learning outcomes have been included in the recently amended Central RTE Rules, for greater focus on quality of education. The outcomes, which have been shared with all states and union territories, are expected to serve as guidelines to make sure that all children acquire the appropriate level of learning. Learning outcomes for social science, science, environmental studies, mathematics and languages (Urdu, English and Hindi) have been shared up to the elementary stage.
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed the learning outcomes to assess the levels of learning of students. The NCERT conducts periodic surveys at the national level to assess the learning achievements of students of classes 3, 5, 8 and 10. From this year onwards, the districts will be the sampling units for the surveys and the learning will be assessed on the basis of the learning outcomes developed by the NCERT.
