Jamia Millia Islamia partners with UNICEF to make people aware of child health issues

Jamia Millia Islamia’s AJK Mass Communication Research Centre partnered with UNICEF to conduct an awareness workshop on child health issues such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, anaemia, breastfeeding and nutrition.

The AJK Mass Communication Research Centre, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) conducted a day-long capacity building workshop, which was attended by more than 40 radio jockeys and programming heads from All India Radio and private FM stations from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Assam; academia from JMI, the Department of Anthropology (University of Delhi), IGNOU and IIMC; officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), the Ministry of Women and Child Development, and UNICEF; and representatives of civil society organisations such as Save the Children, Clinton Health Access Initiative and The YP Foundation.

The objective of the workshop was to highlight and bust myths associated with pneumonia, diarrhoea, anaemia and non-exclusive breastfeeding. It aimed to prioritise scientific medical knowledge over folk beliefs and factor in relationships between cosmopolitan and indigenous knowledge, right and wrong, science and magic, truth and myth.

As a part of the partnership with UNICEF, JMI will conduct similar workshops in future as well with other departments of the university to promote research on these topics and sensitise the youth on the issue.
