West Bengal to bring back ”pass-fail” system for upper-primary

West Bengal government has decided to bring back the ”pass-fail” system in classes five and eight from the next academic session. West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee conveyed the information to PTI on Thursday. A notification will be released soon regarding this issue.

“This is in conformity with the recommendations of the Ministry of Human Resources Development to bring back the pass-fail system in classes 5 and 8. Students would have to pass examinations to be promoted to classes 6 and 9 from the next academic session,” Mr Chatterjee said.

In the year 2010, the West Bengal Government first removed the detention policy for the students of grade five to eight. West Bengal was among most of the states that had earlier mooted revoking the no-detention policy by the Centre. But the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) always allowed the respective state governments to decide about this academic regulation.
