The gerund always serves as a noun. It can be used on its own or with an object or adverbial:
Examples:
Mountaineering is fun.
She denied stealing the bycycle.
I like Jogging in the morning.

USAGE:
1. The gerund as subject:
    Aerobics can boost your immune system.

2. The gerund as a subject complement
     Seeing is believing.

3.The gerund as the object of a verb
    I really enjoy swimming in the sea.

4. Verb + gerund
    We do appreciate your taking time from your busy schedule to attend the meeting.

5. Preposition + gerund
     She rushed out of the class room without saying a word.

6. Verb + preposition + gerund
    My brother is always talking about his favorite movies.

7. The gerund used in compound nouns
    Drinking water (water for drinking) 
    A reading lamp (a lamp for reading)
    A swimming cap (a cap for swimming)

8.Other expressions followed by the gerund'.
    No use crying over spilt milk.
    It would be worth giving the project a try.
