Methods of preparation of xenon oxides and xenon oxy fluorides:

Xenon tetra fluoride and xenon hexafluoride undergo complete hydrolysis to give xenon trioxide whereas xenon hexafluoride undergoes partial hydrolysis to give oxyfluorides such as xenon oxy tetrafluoride (or) xenon dioxydifluoride.

Xenon trioxide:

The central atom xenon, in xenon trioxide undergoes sp3 hybridisation. Xenon trioxide has seven electron pairs. Of these, six are bond pairs and one is a lone pair.

The structure of xenon trioxide is pyramidal owing to the presence of a lone pair of electrons on the central xenon atom.

Xenon oxy tetra fluoride:

The central atom in xenon oxy tetra fluoride undergoes sp3d2 hybridisation. Xenon oxy tetra fluoride has seven electron pairs. Of these, six are bond pairs and one is a lone pair.The structure of xenon oxy tetra fluoride is square pyramidal owing to the presence of a lone pair of electrons on the central xenon atom.

Xenon dioxydifluoride:

The central atom in xenon dioxydifluoride undergoes sp3d hybridisation. Xenon dioxydifluoride has seven electron pairs. Of these, six are bond pairs and one is a lone pair. The structure of xenon dioxydifluoride is seesaw owing to the presence of a lone pair of electrons on the central xenon atom.
