It is used to express an action that happened or completed in past, usually a very little time before speaking, or action which is just completed.
  • To talk about the past:

            He worked as a sales manager in a reputed company.

            He travelled all over world.

  • Hypotheses:

If he worked hard, he would succeed.

If he started before four, he would catch the train.

  • Wishes:

I wish it wasn’t so hot.
