Auxilliary Verbs

The auxiliary verb helps the main verb and is also called a "helping verb."With auxiliary verbs, you can write sentences in different tenses, moods, or voices.

Auxiliary verbs are: be, do, have, will, shall, would, should, can, could, may, might, must, ought etc.,

Study the following examples.

  • You should work hard in mathematics.

  • I am having my breakfast now.

  • They have been asking questions since Monday.

  • The letter was written by Maria.

  • You may go home if you feel sick.

  • You must come today!

In the above sentences, the underlined words are auxiliary verbs or helping verbs.

Auxiliary verb are of two types:

  1. Modal verbs

  2. non modal Verbs
