It is used to express an action that happened or completed in past, usually a very little time before speaking, or action which is just completed.

The simple past is used:

1.To talk about the past: event or action.
  • She studied in a reputed school.
  • He completed his schooling in an international school.
  • Did he meet you last night?

2. Hypotheses:or conditional clause
  • If he ran fast, he would succeed in the race.
  • If she started for the office before five, she would meet the manager..
  • If  they bought gift, Meera would feel happy.

3. For the habits in the past
  • She studied Arabic when she was a child.
  • He played the flute.
  • He didn't prepare for exams.
  • We enjoyed watching birds when we were young.
