CBSE AI curriculum to be prepared by IBM

The Central Board of Secondary Education has announced that the curriculum for the newly introduced Artificial Intelligence (AI) course would be created from scratch by experts from IBM India along with members of its global team and other subject experts. The idea to introduce the elective course, which will be offered for the students for classes 9 to 12, came from Niti Ayog- the government’s think tank.

IBM plans to launch a pilot project in 1000 schools across Bengaluru, Delhi, Bhubaneswar, Chennai. Hyderabad and Kolkata before finalising the curriculum. The project will start with creating awareness for school principals followed by training for teachers on the foundational skills for the subject. Students would also be given a five-stage training which would include research informed readings, customised online resources and hands-on projects.

The curriculum also involves Capstone Project, where 40 students from these 1000 schools would get a chance to participate in appropriate forums like hackathons and international conferences. The project also gives the students a chance to be mentored by IBM experts for advanced prototype development and on-ground implementation of projects to make the foundation stronger.

The program which requires 36 hours of school time for completion will also include a chapter on ethics covering issues of security, privacy and transparency.
