Maximum foreign students prefer Karnataka for higher education

Most of the foreign students who come to India for higher studies are from Nepal. According to Human Resource and Development (HRD) data, most foreign students choose Karnataka for higher education. 

According to the data, the total number of foreign students who enrolled for higher education is 47,427.

While BTech is the most popular course among foreign students, a good number of foreigners also choose to pursue BBA. Interestingly, male foreign students outnumber female foreign students. 

“Among the top courses is BTech with 8,861 students with 85 per cent male students. The second-popular course is BBA (3,354), BSc (3,320) and BA (2,226). BPharma, BCA, MBBS, Nursing and BDS are among the popular undergraduate courses,” the 2018-19 survey report said.

Karnataka has the highest number of foreign students at 10,023, followed by Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Delhi, Gujarat and Telangana.

It is important to note that though most of the foreign students in India come from Nepal, followed by Afghanistan, the maximum enrollment for PhD is from Ethiopia (295) and Yemen (149).

According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) by the HRD Ministry, ‘Foreign students come from 164 different countries from across the globe. The top 10 countries constitute 63.7 percent of the total foreign students enrolled. [The] Highest share of foreign students come from neighbouring countries, of which Nepal is 26.88 per cent of the total, followed by Afghanistan (9.8 per cent), Bangladesh (4.38 per cent), Sudan (4.02 per cent), Bhutan (3.82 per cent) and Nigeria (3.4 per cent)…’ 

For the annual survey, the higher education institutions were categorised into universities, colleges and stand-alone institutions. A total of 962 universities, 38,179 colleges and 9,190 stand-alone institutions participated in the survey for the year 2018–19.
