Ways to improve your child’s self-esteem

You want a child with high self-esteem and cheerful demeanor. However, don’t think it will happen naturally. Parents play a significant role in boosting kids’ self-esteem.

The following points will guide you how to improve your child’s self-esteem.

Don’t compare him with his peers: Don’t compare him with his siblings or peers. One may be good at Maths, while he may not be. He may be a good speller, while his sibling may not be.  He may play chess, while his sister plays tennis. He may just want to read books, while his peers may enjoy outdoor games. Each person is a unique flower in a garden. It is as simple as that.

Let him help you with your chores: Ask your child to help you with your household chores. Let him do his things by himself – it could be making the bed; folding his clothes; combing his hair; and polishing his shoes. These safe things he can do by himself and feel good about it.

Don’t rescue your child from difficult situations: Working through various experiences on his own will give him a chance to grow. Growing pains can’t happen if you don’t let them. Let him handle a bully at school by himself; let him explain his skipping homework to the teacher by himself; and let him search a lost book by himself. Let him be independent.
