Govt plans content depository to raise teaching standards

The government is looking at creating a content depository for teachers. The depository will help teachers to develop, curate and spread teaching material and, therefore, improve education quality.

The government believes that a content depository will lead to better learning outcomes in schools. It could also serve as a resource for the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), which prepares curriculum and publishes books for schools. The NCERT could use the depository to periodically update its curriculum.

Furthermore, the government aims to encourage teachers to create innovative content in the form of text, audio and video.

The EkStep Foundation, which Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani promotes, is creating an open-source software platform for the depository. This will enable teachers to use the depository as an online resource. They will be able to access it through their computers or an app on their smartphones.
