How to manage a noisy class

Managing a noisy classroom is one of the biggest challenges to teachers. No doubt, noisy students are a major deterrent to teaching/learning. At times, these students spoil other well-behaved students in the class. Therefore, being a teacher, you should address this issue before it goes beyond control.

The following tips will pave your way.

  • Being a teacher, you should always speak in a soft voice in the classroom. Avoid talking loud or shouting at the top of your voice. If you are capable of keeping your voice down, it will set an example for your students to follow.
  • If one of your students is very loud, do not delay to take extreme steps to get him/her to stop being noisy. Things will be easier for you to manage if you start controlling such students at the beginning of the academic session.
  • It is true that you cannot control a noisy class without your students’ cooperation. Get your students involved in maintaining discipline in the classroom. You can also encourage them to come up with their suggestions regarding the issue.
  • Apart from noise, some noisy activities disrupt the teaching/learning process. These activities can be of various types, for example, talking, patting the desk, or whispering during the class or test, among others. Such activities not only create noise in the classroom but also pose a threat to classroom discipline.
  • Sometimes, classroom-based activities lead to lots of noise in the classroom. This ultimately disturbs other classes. Being a teacher, you should make sure that your students are behaving appropriately while participating in such activities. It will help you keep your classroom’s noise level in check.
  • Last but not the least; try to be consistent while educating students about positive classroom behavior. You should set goals and stick to them. It will help you manage your class and obviously, the noise level.
